Living  the good life... one day at a time

What is New at the Farm? 02/08/10

"Every gardener knows that under the cloak of winter lies a miracle ... a seed waiting to sprout, a bulb opening to the light, a bud straining to unfurl.  And the anticipation nurtures our dream."

                                                                                     Barbara Winkler

A blanket of snow is not anymore an unusual view at the farm this winter. All the Eastern North Carolina Birds illustrated in the poster in our mudroom are in our birdfeeders, the hens look confused and disoriented in their new white pasture but the rhythm in our kitchen hasn't changed a lot, always a lot of baking around...

At The Farm

*Winter at the farm has been slow in every aspect, only one farmers market a week when weather permits, not many outdoor jobs to be done (gardening jobs or constructions jobs-our second source of income) but as all this "free time" will never go to waste, with Fabian decided taking different routes to write our own cooking and baking blogs. They are not another cooking or baking blog, we write them with the sole purpose to bring inspiration and encouragment to the people out there to take the cooking pans and baking sheets and put them to work!

* We have added more artisan breads to our "Artisan Bread Collection": Portuguese Bread, New York Rye, Brioches, Herbs of Provence Fougasse, French Bread and as always our sourdough bread now made with the wild yeasts of our Piedmont Region.

* Our Greenhouse needed to be ready by the end of January but is still on the making. This winter weather let us behing in so many things around the farm but we will caught up soon!

*The Earth Fire Oven is planned to be done by the end of February, beginning of March to have it ready for the 2010 farmers market season and will allow us offer a much better bread made with ancient artisan techniques.

*Last but not least, we are still attending our only year round farmers market in University Mall-Chapel Hill- South Estes Farmers Market  www.southestesfarmersmarket.com
